Our objective is to identify those in need, assess their damages, and inform and coordinate our faith based community when responding to those needs. This response can be through volunteer help, donations of items and financial support.
SALT has been involved over the past year with the aftermath of Tropical Storm Erin that came through San Antonio in August of 2007 and dropped 15 inches of rain on the west and southwest sides of town. A list of over 300 homes that reported damages was given to SALT from the City of San Antonio. Through our efforts we have contacted 80 families and have discovered 38 families still in need of some type of assistance. To date we have completed work on 14 homes, and have done partial work on 9 others. This work is still ongoing.
Over the past 6 years our faith based community has been involved in supporting the recovery operations of the following disaster events:
The flood of July 2002
The evacuees from Hurricane Katrina and Rita, Sept. 2005
Tropical Storm Erin, August 2007
The evacuees from Hurricane Ike, Sept. 2008
It is not "if" we have another disaster, but "when" we have another disaster, that puts us in a position to try and be more proactive and not just reactive to future events.
